Cleaning and disinfecting an office to reduce the spread of germs, bacteria, dirt, and virus is the main goal of any cleaning company. Right now, as workers begin to once again return to shared office space, in the shadow of Covid-19, we must be sure we are keeping up standards to a higher level.
A Cleaning Service has decades of experience in both residential and commercial cleaning and shares the following tips for cleaning your office (whether home or away) to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and other diseases.
Cleaning Versus Sanitizing
Cleaning and sanitizing are two different processes that many people confuse as one. Cleaning removes dirt, dust, grime, and garbage from an area or surface. Sanitizing, on the other hand, uses special techniques, such as chemical application, heat/steam, or lighting to kill bacteria, virus,es and/or germs.
Covid-19 Cleaning Tip 1: Do a general, overall cleaning
Wearing disposable gloves, wipe surfaces of dust and/or dirt. Take out all trash. Clean glass surfaces.
Covid-19 Cleaning Tip 2: Disinfect
Again, while wearing gloves, identify the high touch areas such as phones, keyboards, doorknobs, light switches, desktops, countertops, tables, backs of chairs, handles, etc. Apply a disinfectant according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Many disinfectants need to be applied and allowed to sit and/or air dry. Read the instructions for use and follow them – don’t just spray and wipe if that’s not what’s called for or you will miss the disinfecting benefit of the cleaner.
Be sure to have proper ventilation and never mix two chemicals as it could cause a reaction. Alcohol or bleach solutions can be used as a disinfectant as well but be sure to use the proper dilution for safe and effective disinfection.
Covid-19 Cleaning Tip 3: Create a routine
During this time many properties are conducting on-going or more frequent cleaning. Make an action plan for frequently touched surfaces and well as general cleaning.
Tips for Specific Areas
Soft Surfaces/Washables: Carpets, rugs, upholstery, curtains, pillows, blankets, and other items should be washed normally. Those that can be laundered should be washed in as warm of water as is safe for the product.
If the bedding has been used by someone who has been sick, don’t shake it, wear gloves to remove the items and place them in the wash. After the laundry is started, remove and dispose of gloves and wash your hands.
Electronics: When cleaning electronics, avoid spraying wet cleaners directly on them. Use covers to protect electronics from being touched while offering a wipeable surface. Using a dry cleaner or high-alcohol content based cleaner is typically recommended by electronic manufacturers, but follow the user guide for your specific electronic.
Outdoor Space: Typically outdoor space doesn’t need to be disinfected, but high touch areas should be cleaned. Wipe areas such as handrails, arm/hand rests, tabletops, handles, etc.
