As the warmer weather approaches, we’re more inclined to open our windows to let in some fresh air and cool breezes. But with those open windows often comes a bit more dirt, pollen, and debris. Today we’ll give you some tips on keeping your home clean as you enjoy the season.
Deep Cleaning
Some items in our home, such as drapes, high shelves, or behind appliances, only need to be cleaned every once in a while, making them easy to overlook. We recommend creating a set routine or a schedule, so you don’t miss those good (and necessary) deep cleans! A deep clean will involve some elbow grease but tackling all the details makes our homes feel almost new.
5 Spring Cleaning Strategies
Clean from top to bottom
When doing a professional deep clean, it’s always a good strategy to start from the top and work your way down. Starting with dusting and cleaning fans, changing air filters, dusting blinds and shelves, and then moving on to the floors and baseboards.
Create a schedule
Make a list of what to deep clean and how often. Don’t try to take it all on at once. Pace tasks out over the year, doing what makes the most sense for the seasons, such as shampooing the carpet AFTER the yuck of winter has passed or cleaning the chimney in the fall before the first use of the fireplace.
Timed cleaning
Use a timer to get through your cleaning task faster. Timed cleaning creates a sense of urgency and removes the dread of cleaning taking too long by assigning an allotted amount of time (i.e., 15 minutes) to cleaning tasks. The timer gives a competitive edge and helps us clean more efficiently and effectively.
Organize areas
Having specific areas for items to be put away helps with keeping cleaning tasks minimal. For example, when there are places for tools or dirty clothes, they are more likely to be put away. Organization creates “rules” for where things go – consider a classroom with student cubbies or lockers as an example. Designated areas where we can empty our pockets, hang our jackets, and take off shoes upon entry are examples of how organized areas help reduce cleaning tasks.
Clean a bit every day
Whether it’s timed cleaning or cleaning as we go, a good routine for our daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning needs is essential. Taking care of it systematically, a bit at a time, will help things from getting overwhelming.
If you find yourself too busy or too tired to complete your cleaning chores, consider a cleaning service. Weekly or bi-weekly services may be more affordable than you think and can make a huge difference in your peace and sanity.
